INTERNATIONAL PAIRS
 
On 21st and 22nd September I was one of the official photographers for the International Pairs World Final, which was held in St Andrews. Then on 14th and 15th October I was involved in photographing the International Pairs UK Final in Carnoustie.

SPF RESULTS
 
Some of my images did well in the recent SPF competition. These included "Zantedeschia" which gained 14 out of a possible `5 points and gained a judge's award.

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL SALON
 
"Returning to Roost" and "Seed Heads" have both been accepted by the Edinburgh International Exhibition 2008. "Returning to Roost" was highly commended.

SCOTTISH SALON
"Returning to Roost" was one of three of my photographs accepted by the Scottish International Salon of Photography. It gained 14 out of a possible 15 points and was highly commended.

CHOICE OF  PAPER
I am delighted that Harman Technology has chosen two of my photographs for demonstration purposes. These images are "Wedding Spirit" and "Tay Rail Bridge". Harman Fibre-Based Gloss paper is my own personal choice for making gloss prints because of its fine art properties.
 
ST ANDREWS PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
I am very honoured to have been elected President of St Andrews Photographic Society for the year 2008-9. This promises to be a very busy year for the Society. The first event is our annual exhibition in May.

24-27 February 2008
The "Focusing on Imaging" Exhibition is at the NEC in Birmingham. This is Europe's biggest photographic exhibition. Harman Technology has a stand there and have selected three of my photographs to demonstrate the characteristics of their new inkjet papers.
 
Monday 18th February 2008
One of my photographs, "Moonrise", is being used on the cover of the brochure of houses available for sale at Parkhill Farm Steading, Newburgh. This photograph featured in my recent River of Light exhibition.

Wednesday 13th February 2008
I was invited to give a presentation on digital photography to Gauldry & Balmerino SWRI. This was a very pleasant evening for me. I showed a variety of my recent prints, some local and some not.
 
Monday 4th February 2008
I was invited to judge Forfar and District Hillwalking Club's annual photographic competitition. It was no easy task choosing the winning photograph, there were so many good images!
 
Monday 28th January 2008
One of my images, Returning to Roost, gained 20/20 in the "Three-Way Projected Image Competition" which involved three local photographic societies.
 
November 24th to December 9th 2007
My "River of Light" exhibition was held in the University of Dundee Botanic Gardens. This exhibition featured images of the estuary of the River Tay taken over the past year. To see the images from this exhibition please follow THIS LINK.

October 9th 2007
I gave a presentation to Brechin Photographic Society. This talk about my photography, was illustrated by a selection of my photographs, and was held in the Community Centre, Damacre Road.

September  21st 2007
I was honoured to be invited to judge one of Carnoustie Camera Club's photographic competitions. There were five categories - Colour prints ("Water"), Colour prints (open), Monochrome prints (open), Colour slides ("Movement"), and Colour slides (open). The work was of an extremely high standard and arriving at a decision in each category was no easy task.

August 18th 2007 - The boats at Newburgh, featured elsewhere in this web site, are almost no more. One has been broken up already, another is to be towed away for scrap, and the third (shown below) is to be burned on 18th August as part of the Newburgh Festival celebrations.

Saturday 21st July to Saturday 11th August 2007
Some of my photographs are being exhibited by Pitlochry Gallery Association this summer. Dates for this exhibition are 21st JULY - 11th AUGUST
The exhibition is to be hosted by The Atholl Centre, Atholl Road, Pitlochry (next to the Tourist Office).

 

Friday 3rd - Sunday 5th August 2007
If you are visiting Pittenweem Festival this weekend you can see some of my newer work in an exhibition by St Andrews Photographers which is being held in Pittenweem Library. For the rest of the week this exhibition is only open at normal library times. (These opening hours are: Monday 2-7, Wednesday 1.30-5 and Friday 9.30-1.00pm).

This week one of my photographs - "Study in Blue and White" won the Evening Telegraph prize in Ferryport Fesival's photographic competition.

Monday 4th June / Friday 8th June 2007
Twice this week I took a trip out to the May Isle with friends. On Monday the poor weather broke to give a surprisingly warm and sunny day. On Friday however the weather failed to clear after a major overnight thunderstorm. On both occasions the puffin photography was good though.

Wednesday 6th June 2007
One of my photographs won first prize in a photo competition organised by the Attic Gallery and sponsored by Rosslyn Fine Arts. The winning picture was  "Window in Hillswick" (see below) which was re-titled as "Room with a View" by the gallery. Edit Text

Saturday 19th May 2007
Three of my photographs were accepted for the Scottish Salon of Photography, an international exhibition that opened in Stirling on this date. One of these photographs ("Cubist Giaconda") did particularly well, gaining a judges ribbon. (See http://www.scottish-photographic-salon.org/gallery/2007/colour/) The other two that were accepted were the images of a "Quiet Backwater" and "Window in Hillswick". The latter was photo of the Month for March.

Saturdays 26 May, 2nd June and 9th June 2007
A short course in creative landscape photography was offered in the picturesque Perthshire village of Rait. Please follow the link  on my "Links Page" to CACE to find out more about the Carse Association for Continuing Education.
 
Wednesday 14th March 2007
Three of my prints were successful in winning me the "Kodak Cup" - a local photographic competition where entries required three prints on a related theme. The successful prints were abstract details of boats at Newburgh.

18th February 2007
Several of my photographs were selected for the Inter-Fife Competition - a competition involving Fife's four photographic clubs. Of the photographs submitted, "Serenity on a Quiet Backwater" was selected as the winning colour print. "Tumbleweed" was selected as the winning colour slide. "First Light among the Reeds" was also given 17 out of 20 possible marks for a Black and White print.

I gave a presentation about my photography to Carnoustie Camera Club. This was illustrated by a number of my photographs including several more recent ones that have not yet been exhibited elsewhere.
 
8th November 2006
I gave a presentation to Perthshire Photographic Society in the Perth Museum and Art Gallery, George Street, Perth at 7.30 pm. This talk was illustrated by a selection of my photographs - old and new.
 
11th October 2006
A portfolio of 15 of my images were accepted by the distinctions panel of the Royal Photographic Society for the award of an ARPS. These pictures were all of three old boats at Newburgh in Fife and may be viewed elsewhere on this web site.
 
6th - 11th October 2006
Three of my photographs were exhibited in the Angus Artists Exhibition held in Kirriemuir.
 
A calendar featuring my images of Gauldry and Balmerino is now available from Gauldry Store and Post Office (Contact Susan Barratt). Framed fine art copies of individual images from this calendar are available from myself.

Four of my photographs were exhibited in the Pitlochry Gallery Association exhibition in the Atholl Centre in Pitlochry.

The Royal Photographic Society Scottish Members' Print Exhibition was at the Botanic Gardens in Dundee during July. (The "Window in Hillswick" photograph that is used for the graphics in this web site was featured in this exhibition).

The PIP Travel Photography Guide to Scotland has just been published. This book features an article by myself on photographing St Andrews harbour and the East Sands. ISBN No. is 1 86108 487 0.

I have just returned from a photographic trip to Southern Florida, taking in the Everglades and Florida Keys. One or two images from this trip are included in this web site.

I gave a presentation on my photography to St Andrews Photographic Club. This featured images from both North Fife and the American West.
 
9th - 28th November 2005
An exhibition of my photographs was held in the Byre Theatre, St Andrews in November 2005. This exhibition featured framed photographs taken either in Scotland (predominantly Fife) or in the Western United States. All images are for sale and they may also be viewed on this web site (See my portfolio).

This was the date of my formal retirement from Higher Education and also the start of my greater inolvement with landscape and environmental photography, mainly in North East Fife. Along with the various ventures described elsewhere in this web site, I am now also a part-time student of Art History.

This updated web site became fully operational on the 23rd September 2005, and has been constantly updated since. It has been designed as a showcase and shop window for my photography.
 
11th - 29th July 2005
In the summer of 2005 I undertook a photographic tour of Northern California, taking in the California Coast from the Big Sur (just south of Monterey) to Eureka (near the Oregon border). The tour also included the Northern Sierra Nevada, including Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Several of the images from this tour are included elsewhere in this web site.
 
This tour follows from other previous photographic tours of the American West including Death Valley, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Kodachrome Basin, and the Grand Canyon. Again, a few selected images from these trips are included in this web site. Contact me for details of other images.
 
28th February - 9th April 2005
An exhibition of my photographs was held in St Andrews Public Library. Entitled "Landscape and Light", this exhibition also featured images from the Scottish and American Landscapes.
